Many things have changed over the years. Currently HTML5 is the standard. New browsers and devices have been introduced. Cascading Style Sheets now handle page formatting. Pages created with responsive design, which detect the visitor’s screen size and orientation and change the layout accordingly, get priority in Google. WordPress and other content management programs are very commonly used for creating mobile ready websites and blogs.
Where would one start today? With basic HTML as well as Cascading Style Sheets.
You may ask, “Why not start with WordPress?”
This is not as easy as it sounds. While HTML is not rocket science, nor is it cut and dried. Undoubtedly you will want to have some personal control of the theme you choose, to make your site look professional and unique. This requires you to know Cascading Style Sheets and HTML. For example, its helpful to know which CSS rule takes presidence over another, so you have control of the presentation you are creating.
Your website should display on many different browser versions, devices and operating systems with consistency. A pretty page and a valid page are not enough. If you want to maximize your marketing strategy, you can’t drop the ball on designing and coding your website.
